Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta have made certain equipment required for officials. The following equipment is required:

Black Helmet and half visor, both must be CSA approved. Cost can vary between $50 and $100.

Referee Jersey, can be bought at any sporting goods store, used jerseys are usually available at Sport Swap or Play it Again Sports. Cost can vary between $55 and $75.

Black pants, (for new officials track pants or black dress pants)

Skates, they must be player’s skates as figure skates and goalie skates have open edges

Whistle, appropriate has a pea inside. Typical cost is $15.

The following equipment is not require (optional) but is strongly recommended:

Elbow pads, shin pads and referee girdle

B&P Cycle and Tuxedo both offer discounts to officials, provided you show your Hockey Alberta registration number. Sport Swap usually has referee equipment.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SOUTHLAND OFFICIALS

The number of games an official is assigned is dependent on the number officials in the pool. An official cannot be assigned games until they have a Hockey Alberta registration number. That number must be supplied to the Referee Coordinator. This should be with the official at each of the official’s game.

Officials will be assigned games in levels and divisions that are consistent with their experience.
